Johann Sebastian Bach - "The Goldberg Variations"

£9.99

There are few works of such scope and magnitude composed for a solo keyboard instrument as the Goldberg Variations. This work is an example of the height of Baroque keyboard writing in the variation form and it was the largest keyboard piece published in the 18th Century. The major difficult to overcome when performing this piece, or at least certain parts of it on a modern piano is that it was written for a two manual harpsichord, which allowed for complete clarity of the contrapuntal texture.

Published in 1741, J.S. Bach produced a composition not only of extreme musical and artistic significance but the form and architecture demonstrates his intellectual prowess. The piece is structured as a great work of mathematical symmetry which contrapuntally interweaves the 32 separate episodes, based upon the ground base line introduced in the Aria which remains constant throughout. The genius of Bach lies in the fact that the musical experience of the Goldberg Variations is not compromised by the intricate structure and the listening enjoyment would not be diminished if one was unaware of the complexity of the compositional techniques used during its creation.

This album is released on the label Grand Empirical and was recorded over August 31st & September 1st 2020.
